County Culture. Mixed News

Following County of course is much more than the 90 minutes sat enduring / enjoying a football match, supping a Bovril (other brands available), dodging leaks in the roof (Pop Side), supping variable quality ‘beer’ (Cheadle End) and emptying colostomy bags (Main Stand).

No, to many County fans, and particularly over the last few years, the match day experience must include certain pre and post match events.

A cone of chips from the Friary on Castle Street?

A few quick scoops in the Florist beforehand and the Armoury after?

Showing off the new kit or the correct Italian designer jacket?

Seeing whether the chap with the board full of pin badges has that rare GO GO GO County badge?

Or maybe trying not to bump into the ‘Jesus Saves’ chap on Hardcastle Road. Not seem him for ages mind….

So on to a couple of little snippets of County Culture news.

County have announced the launch of our new kit for our BSP… er.. BSN campaign.

‘Stockport County’s ‘kit launch’ will take place at Edgeley Park on Saturday June 29 with the gates opening at 9.30 am.’

‘New kit suppliers Umbro have pulled out all the stops to ensure our supporters will be able to buy their new County kits and leisure wear in time for their summer holidays and well ahead of the new season.’

‘Ian Bogie and Alan Lord and several members of the playing squad will be in attendance with attractions including bouncy castles, ice cream & burger vans, a football target wall and more.’

The kit launch itself is at 11 a.m. and blimey (!) the bar is open at 10 a.m. The new Umbro shirt will be five quid cheaper than last season’s top. Very welcome news.

I haven’t got any sneak preview images but I hope it is a conservative royal blue top, white shorts with royal blue trim and amber socks. I am sure the socks will not be amber but I saw a selection of supporters designs for County kits and that one took my fancy.

Now, onto what could be some rather sad news and an entry into the ledger of lost ‘County Culture’.

After wobbling out of the beer festival at Edgeley Park at the weekend a couple of us journeyed onto Northgate Road, at the junction of Chatham Street and have last orders at the Alexandra.

The ‘Alex’ as the pub is a multi-roomed gem of a pub in my book. OK, slightly in need of a lick of paint but Robinson’s have such an atmospheric place on their hands.

I know many County fans who have a pre-match or post-match pint there but if what I heard is true, this may be a thing of the past.

It looks like the pub may not be with us for much longer. The for sale sign is up and it may only be a matter of weeks before the place closes.

In fact when we kick off 2013-14 this may be another County watering hole to be lost to 21st century Edgeley and join the list in recent years which includes the Swan, Church, Windsor Castle, Bluebell, Grapes….

In my dreams a wealthy benefactor would take on the Alex (only about 5 minutes from the Cheadle End) and turn it into a shrine to County past and present. There aren’t any real pubs bedecked with County memorabilia are there?

A nice dream though.

Sad to see the Alex go. Used to drink there regular in the 70’s. Greyhound now for me would you guess!

You guys will put me right on this one as when I defected from my hallowed Stockport officially I was to young to frequent local hostelries. So on to the Alex never having been in the place would I be right from your story that it is indeed a Robinsons house and if so and it is for sale/to close is this a sign of things to come from the mighty “Robbies”?. (on the skids) or is my mind doing overtime here?.

Yes, a Robbies house vicman. Not many in last Saturday night and it used to be packed according to the barman. Prices have been put up. Maybe Robinsons no longer want the pub? Sad. Another piece of social and County history at risk.
