County V Bury

Stockport County could secure a play-off place today should Bristol Rovers lose and County beat Bury in the local derby at Edgeley Park today.

County have been in awful form recently, but with just two games to go until the end of the season – and then the possibility of the following play-offs, it would be a brilliant time for County to pick up their form.

Bury aren’t in good forms themselves though although they beat Walsall last week, a team that have already been promoted from League Two and are in the running for the Championship. In previous weeks to that game Bury had three defeats on the trot without scoring a goal.

County visited Bury in December, followed by 2500 County fans, but put in an awful performance and were turned over 2-0.

Bury are likely to be followed by a large crowd today, with the weather looking okay to sit in the open end and build up their lovely sun tans (they don’t get much sun in Bury!).

Vital Quotes:

Tony Dinning: ‘Football has been my life for the last 13 years thanks to Stockport County and I want to repay them.

‘Nothing would please me more than to help get the club out of this division. It would be for the gaffer Jim Gannon and his assistant Peter Ward as much as anybody, two people who have great connections with the club.’

‘The gaffer has said the season will still be a success if we don’t make it to the play-offs, but I have to disagree.

‘Bury are scrapping for points, but after the way we played against MK Dons we will go into the game with a lot of confidence.

‘No disrespect, but if we can’t beat Bury with two games to go we shouldn’t be even looking at the play-offs.’

Stockport County Team News:

County are likely to keep the same team that played last weekend.

Liam Dickinson is still suspended so he won’t come back till next week at Darlington.

Tes Bramble needs a hernia operation and probably won’t feature.

Rob Clare, Michael Raynes, Michael Rose & James Tunnicliffe are all out.

Player to watch: Joe Lewis

With the pressure on, you can start to see a few more mistakes creeping into his game.

It will be interesting to see how he does now the pressure is really on in a huge game, nearly as big as some games last season when we were fighting for survival.

Bury Team News:

Chris Brass and County target Brian Barry-Murphy are both definitely out and won’t feature.

Tom Youngs is likely to start ahead of Glynn Hurst.

Player to watch: Dave Challinor

The ex County man will be key to Bury’s defence today.

How County play could all depend on how quiet he manages to keep Anthony Elding and Adam Proudlock.

Sometimes he can be a bit dodgy and slow, and County could look to exploit the weakness with pace.

However he is a good defender and has experience of what is needed. It will be an interesting battle.

Nervous about this one. A defeat would porbably be disaster, maybe enven a draw. We need these three points badly. Should be 7000+ today. Anyway, win, draw or lose – we’re on the booze!
