Stockport County took all three points back to Edgeley Park with a 2-0 win over local rivals Macclesfield Town today at Moss Rose.

It was one of the coldest days of the season to be standing on an open terrace, but a fantastic second half performance from County ensured that the fans went home with something to warm them up.

Jim Gannon kept the same team that beat Wycombe 6-0 last week.

Macclesfield started the brighter of the two teams and were playing the better Football as County struggle to build anything.

Jason Taylor in particular was having a shocking game and it was hard for County to pick up any pace as the whole team seemed to continue losing the ball.

And Macc should have took the lead, when McNulty and the rest of the Macc team beat the offside trap, McNulty was left with a free header six yards out and somehow managed to head wide of the goal. It doesn’t matter anyway, the free kick should have gone the other way because Thomas had dived.

Thomas dived again moments later, when Rose won a goal kick for County and Thomas just jumped over Rose’s foot and landed on the floor. The referee was shaking his head but didn’t even put Thomas in the book, very surprising.

Macclesfield then had a period of sustained pressure in the last five minutes of the first half but failed to create any real chances, and County went into half time fired up after an incident which led to a 22 man brawl.

Adam Nowland outmuscled Thomas (him again) and Thomas won the free kick for nothing. Thomas got up and ran straight at Nowland for no reason, all players (apart from Macc’s goalkeeper) then ran into the scuffle and it was going off left, right and centre. Dickinson, Taylor and Logan were getting involved the most, but Owen and Turnbull were also making sure they got involved. Jason Taylor was booked from the County site, with the cheat Danny Thomas and Terry Dunfield booked from Macclesfield’s side.

County were out five minutes before the referees and Macclesfield for the second half, and were going through a series of warm ups with Peter Ward.

And it paid off as County started the second half much stronger and created some chances, aswell as having much more of the ball.

Liam Dickinson then gave County the lead, David Poole whipped a corner into the near post and Dickinson rose above everybody else and powered the header into the top corner to send the County fans absolutely wild.

Adam Proudlock could have made it two when Brain dropped the ball, Proudlock fired an effort inches wide of the post from 18 yards out.

Macclesfield were creating chances though aswell, and Gritton had a snap shot from the edge of the area but it flew wide.

And in the 90th minute, when the quiet Macclesfield fans were streaming out of the ground, Liam Dickinson beat the offside trap, had time to finish, shot straight at the keeper, but Adam Proudlock was charging in and finished from a couple of yards out – 2-0 to County and another wild celebration on the terrace.

The full time whistle went and the players ran over to celebrate with the 1800 or so travelling County fans, none of the County fans wanted to leave the ground.

To cap the whole day off, 1000 County fans were walking back to the train station. County songs were echoing around the streets of Macclesfield, and there were no Macclesfield fans in sight. Quality.
