Rumours are circulating that Sammy McIlroy, just departed of Morecambe after a disappointing season, could be set for a return to Edgeley Park in the manager’s hotseat.

McIlroy held the position at County from October 2003 – when he left Northern Ireland to join the Hatters under the stewardship of one Brian Kennedy – until November of 2004 when he left by mutual consent.

The Irishman’s got experience in the Conference, taking Macclesfield Town (where he remains a legend) back into the Football League for the first time in 20 years back in 1997.

He left the Shrimpers this week by mutual consent after guiding the side to a play-off semi-final last season before a bizarre 7-2 defeat to Dagenham & Redbridge.

This season however was much different, and his men struggled to a 20th place finish, followed by the exit of McIlroy.

The rumours are already spreading that he could be interested in a return to Edgeley Park after he stated today that he would be seeking a new challenge right away – however we are told as of yet, he has not applied for the County job and is ‘mulling over’ sending in his application to the club.

Interviews for the job are being held this week according to Chief Exec Graham Shaw, with Ray Mathias still thought to be the front-runner.

Err.. maybe. I would still have Mathias over him though.

  • scfcsam says:

    yep

  • scfcsam says:

Sorry, that should have been a “Yep, I’d have him back!”

Knows what it takes to get out of the Conference the right way. Need to sort out the ownership issue though.

No no no no no! I can’t believe the rumours are true. scfcsam – check Sammy Macs’ record out again when he was at County! Ray has done enough for me to get the job.

  • Kremb says:

The fact he used to manage rivals Macc also puts me off him a bit wheres as Mathias was only assisting.

  • rylester says:

No, no no. Give me the job. I keep 11 Donkeys on a ploughed field in Cheshire and take my fans for a ride every Saturday!! I can do it!!

  • Kremb says:

1 vote for Rylester, 1 vote for Mathias and 1 vote for McIlory. We’re tied deadlock for who will become the new boss of Stockport County.

  • local lad says:

I can’t spaek for rylester but Maciroy is not the man, he wasnt the first time didnt he spend a lot of kennedys money while it was there so no second chances the last few games showed Mathias has got some knowledge about the game

Nay nay and thrice nay, not in a million years, what next Jim Gannon?, these guys have had their day.
Give it to Ray for Christs sake, has he not proved his commitment this last couple of months and has publicly stated that he love to lead us through BSP and beyond.
    Power to your elbow Ray.

If we had the AV system of voting, I reckon you’ll get the job rylester!

What are they thinking of!!! Mcilroy was successful at Macclesfield with a team that Harry Wrag had assembled. As soon as he had to start constructing a team under his own steam, he was a disaster. He was well out of his depth when he was at Northern Ireland. He took over a successfull team at Morecambe with the same results as he had at Macclesfield. I don’t have to remind you what he was like at Stockport,it was painfull.
