So, pre-season is over and its now the week before the season as County boss Jim Gannon steps up everything in training ready for the big kick off against Hereford United on Saturday at Edgeley Park.

Overall five friendlies were completed, aswell as a tour game against Scunthorpe and a 60 minute kick about against a Spanish pub team before the game was abandoned.

The opposition of the five friendlies ranged from North West Counties League Division Two, to Championship standard and the results panned out so that we won 1, lost 2, and drew 2. We also lost against Scunthorpe in Spain, and we were beating the Spanish side 3-0 before the game was abandoned.

Woodley Sports 1-1 Stockport County
They estimated that around 400-500 would turn up, but Woodley Sports Football stadium was full of around 1000 County fans last night as they all turned up to see the County squad in action for the first pre-season friendly on English soil (it wasn`t real soil though).

Turning up at the ground, I had heard stories off people about the grass not being real, but I didn`t expect it to be like it was. Apparently it also burns if you fall, so we were all hoping that none of the County players took a nasty fall on it.

On the pitch, if you were from a different country you would have thought that Woodley were the professional team during the warm ups.

Stockport County 1-3 Leicester City
It is always good to get back home, and walking into Edgeley Park I was surprised by the sight that I saw.

It looked unusually clean and tidy, the Sale fans have been inside painting and when the seats are empty it does look a nice ground. The normally dull grey wall at the back of the Railway End, which was the home for around 150 Leicester fans, was painted blue and it really looked the part.

Cheadle Town 0-1 Stockport County
County recorded their second win of the pre-season against Cheadle Town.

It was much a different team from the Friday night, when it was the turn of the players who were sat on the bench on Friday to start.

Hednesford Town 0-0 Stockport County
Part of the Ashley Williams deal was to play in a friendly against Hednesford Town, and around 400 County fans made the trip to the non-league club to see a 0-0 draw played out with many trialists in the team.

Adam Le Fondre had the best chance of the game towards the end, but it was well saved by the Hednesford keeper leaving the game to finish 0-0.

Stockport County 0-1 Tranmere Rovers
So here it is, the last game of the pre-season campaign before the start of the season and Edgeley Park wasn`t looking very full for a game on the Saturday and infact there was more at EP for the game against Leicester than there was today.

Kevin Ellison was starting for Tranmere, as they got off to the better start and tested County keeper Tim Deasy in the opening minutes.

Tes Bramble had a feeble shot saved by Gavin Ward in the Tranmere goals, after some good work by Michael Malcolm have him the chance to shoot.

Tranmere took the lead minutes later, and it was Ellison who was the provider as his free-kick was headed into the goal by McCready.

County had a fantastic chance to level later on in the half, when Bramble was fouled in the box but Tony Dinning of all people hit the post with the resulting penalty.

Gareth Taylor should have doubled Tranmere`s lead minutes before half time but he wasted a back post header and the scored stayed at half time 1-0 to Tranmere.

Tony Dinning was taken off about 10 minutes into the second half, and was replaced with Jamie McGuire. The first time he was involved in play was when he hit a good cross towards Keith Briggs who had his header well saved.

The game ended 1-0 to Tranmere without too many more worries, but County will definitely have to up the performance for next Saturday against Hereford United.

  • I still think a finish around 10th this season would be a success. Give Jimbo a chance to build for promotion challenging 2007-8.
