Exeter City striker Adam Stansfield has been diagnosed with bowel cancer. The 31-year-old forward had been admitted to hospital last week for blood tests on a seemingly innocuous abdominal injury that had escalated pretty badly.

And yesterday The Grecians confirmed that the ex-Yeovil cult hero had been diagnosed with cancer of the bowel.

The official statement read:

The results unfortunately inform that Adam has bowel cancer.

The cancer is localised and Stanno is upbeat, positive, and has asked for the operation to be brought forward.

We all look forward to seeing Stanno at our up and coming games and back scoring goals for Exeter City, as he does, for fun at the beginning of next season.

We all echo that. Get well soon to the lad and let’s hope he’s back in an Exeter shirt next year.

Stansfield scored a decisive second goal for City in a 3-1 win over County at Edgeley Park before Christmas.
