Gary Ablett spoke before tonight’s big match with high-flying Swindon at the County Ground, in an ‘optimistic’ mood but wary of Town’s obvious threat.

Danny Wilson has had a magic season with The Robins, guiding them into a concrete play-off place – only seven points off an automatic promotion spot with a game in hand – and gaining his side a reputation of one of the best footballing teams in the league.

Swindon were the visitors to Edgeley Park in mid-January, and though they came away with a 1-0 victory through a Billy Paynter penalty, many County fans saw that game as the start of a mini-revival and upturn in our fortunes, as performances and results have upturned since then.

Ablett knows the ‘mental toughness’ of his side has improved since the addition of eight new players, and he’s aware of how pivotal tonight’s match could be – if not to stay up this season, just to maintain a bit of pride and claw ourselves off the bottom of the table.

‘I think everyone who we come up against seems pleased that they get a result, and I think that shows how well the boys have done recently. We tend to do quite well in games, but the lads and I know that the table doesn’t lie.’

‘I’ve been relatively pleased with our performances over the past few weeks. It’s going to be a difficult game, Swindon are a good footballing side and Danny Wilson’s got them playing as a unit there.’

Kick-off is 7:45pm tonight at the County Ground.

* More rumours are surfacing that Jim Melrose’s consortium have failed the ‘fit and proper’ test that the Football League give to prospective new owners, after a brief article saying so on an Insolvency News site.

I have emailed the Football League for clarification on this and I’ll stick the reply on here as soon as I get it!
