Plymouth Argyle manager (or head coach!) Paul Mariner has been keeping a watchful eye on the progress of striker George Donnelly during his time with County.

Mariner, who bought the big striker from non-league Skelmersdale in March 2009 yet hasn’t fielded him in a first-team match for the Pilgrims, agreed to Gary Ablett’s request to take forward on for the rest of the season rather than the original one-month loan deal – and he’s been pleased with the 21-year-old since the move.

‘I thought he took his two goals very well last weekend. I saw them on the television.

‘Stockport seem to be happy with him, which isn’t a surprise to me.’

‘He’s a high energy player and he needs to be playing in battle conditions.’

‘The time I was working with him he was getting into the positions but he just couldn’t finish.’

‘Half the battle is getting into those positions and not many people can do that. Then there is the finishing bit.’

‘Hopefully, he will hone those skills at Stockport.’

Donnelly has notched three times for County in seven appearances, and ill be making his eighth in a start against Charlton at the Valley today.

Come on County!
