Multi-millionaire businessman Brian Kennedy, whose company Cheshire Sports owns Sale Sharks and until the July takeover by the Stockport County Supporters Trust owned Stockport County Football Club has revealed he does not want to invest any more money into either club.

Mr Kennedy whose fortune was listed in the Times rich list at £208 million said ‘I have put as much money as I am going to into sport, there is no more now. Kennedy who was speaking on BBC GM said ‘Both Sale Sharks and Stockport County must now become self sufficient….. as is well documented I have put £4 million into Stockport County. I have no intention of putting any more money into either of the clubs [County or Sale Sharks].’

Paradoxically further ground improvements have been mooted at Edgeley Park and even an increase in capacity, although Kennedy does not rule out sale Sharks moving away from Edgeley Park, a move that would be welcomed by many County supporters. Kennedy was keen to point out that ‘Sale Sharks remaining at Edgeley Park is playing a big part in keeping County running.’

Of County Kennedy said ‘Stockport County was absolutely bust when Cheshire Sports took over. The club was losing £2 million a year and was gone. It was evaporating. Our objective was always for Stockport County not to lose money, we needed to make it into a viable business. We achieved that after investing several million into the club but long term it wasn’t going to work.I felt that handing over to the Trust was the best way forward.’

‘The community, local businesses and the supporters now need to back the football club, they can use the stadium for free and Cheshire Sport effectively continue to sponsor them’ [£750,000 over the next 6 years].

‘I’ve think I’ve been more than fair, but I suppose you’ll never win over some fans unless you’re successful on the pitch’

Trust Chairman, Norman Beverley appears relaxed, saying ‘I’m not worried at all, written agreements are in place regarding ongoing sponsorship from Cheshire Sport so I’m confident that Mr Kennedy will continue to honour that.’

‘He is an honourable man and I’m sure he’ll continue to do what he thinks is right’

Well I must confess that I am not experienced in the world of business. County are still alive and in my book we are keeping our head above water. The club is owned by people who love it. We haven’t much money but passion-a-plenty.

The poll has been updated. What do you think?

Arthur signing off. I’m due for a break with my sister in Bournemouth soon, so may not be around to contribute so this site is going begging for the right County fan.
