Former County assistant John Ward has praised Stockport County and revealed he had developed a love for the club in the short time he was at Edgeley Park.

Ward left the Hatters to join Aidy Boothroyd at Colchester Utd. The former Carlisle boss proved himself to be very popular at County in his short stint with us.

Ward, speaking to stockportcounty.com, also denied rumours that he had decided to leave after not being paid by the adminstrators, saying his’leaving was nothing to do with County.’

When quizzed on the rumours, he replied:

‘Absolutely not. I got paid when they told me I would get paid and my leaving was nothing to do with County. As I’ve said, it took me two or three days to make my final decision because of the way that I was treated with respect by everyone at Stockport County.

‘Everything at Stockport County was absolutely first class. The people treated me with great respect, the players and the management, as I’ve said and we part with good wishes to each other.

I have got, in a short space of time, a real affection for Stockport County and the people who are trying to make it a proper football club again. There are some very good people at Stockport County and the people that support County should trust them; I certainly do.’

Ward also praised the County faithful, admitting that the Blue ‘N’ White Army were a major pull for him to stay at EP.

‘The County support has been absolutely fantastic. I saw the numbers turn up at Oldham on the first day, and the fans have cheered us on and been chanting through games even when we have been losing at Huddersfield and at home to Bristol Rovers and Carlisle.

That’s why I couldn’t make the decision to leave quickly and without a lot of thought. The players and everyone at the football club are pulling together to make sure Stockport County become strong again and hopefully they will very, very quickly.’

We would like to wish good luck to John with his new job at Colchester and thank him for his efforts at EP.
