Stockport County have completed the signing of Macclesfield Town striker Matty Mcneil.

McNeil has arrived on a one-year contract and will link up with Anthony Elding, Liam Dickinson, Adam Le Fondre and Adam Proudlock to battle it out for a position upfront at Edgeley Park.

McNeil who scored 4 goals for Macc in 29 starts last season is seen as a strong target man striker at 6.ft.5 who will hold the ball up and bring other players into the game. A key reason for his arrival at County was the impact he made on our defenders who found him a real handful.

County manager Jim Gannon said of McNeil, ‘Ive been a keen admirer of Matty since he was at Hyde United and he has really impressed me over the last couple of seasons at Macclesfield.’

‘He has all the qualities of the pro’s we want at this club. He’s physically strong, very driven, hard working and well equiped for his role within the team.’

McNeil has previously played for Stalybridge and Hyde United before joining Macclesfield particularly impressing at Hyde where he had a very good scoring record.

He may be a surprise signing for many fans but hopefully with some good service and quality players around him he can thrive and find the back of the net for us often this coming season. The signing of Mcneil also almost confirms that Tes Bramble as expected will not be staying at County.

Dear me! This is the last signing I expected. But I’ll give him a chance.

I certainly wasn’t expecting someone so, dare I say it, old!!?! 29 is okay for a lot of positions on the park, but a bit long in the tooth for a centre forward IMO.

If he was 20 years old and a prospect who Jim could develop then OK. But 29, in his footballing peak and 4 goals in 29 starts. As prolific as Tes who I assume he is replacing. Hmmm….

Forgot to say if he was 20 years old I may step forward to help develop him. In Cobdens of course. Oooh, if me mother could see me now!
