County have signed Newcastle United goalkeeper Ben Smith till the end of the season on a non-contract basis.

While Smith enjoyed being at a club like Newcastle, he felt it was time to play some matches, speaking to stockportcounty.com he said: ‘I’ve reached a point in my career where I want to get some more experience and this club seems fantastic.

‘I’m going to get the chance to sit on the bench in the Football League which is much better than reserve team football.

‘I’m really going to try and push on now and hopefully get the number one shirt before the end of the season.’

Jim Gannon had this to say on his new signings “It’s a good boost for the squad for the rest of the season.

“Ben is big and strong, he’s got good hands and he’s a good kicker. We felt we needed one more signing and their good additions to the squad.”

Meanwhile Paul Willis has returned to Anfield after he picked up a wrist injury.

I wonder if any of these keepers will actually start? We’ve had Howarth, then Willis and now Smith. Will Smith be the first one to start besides Spencer?

I’m sure all Jimbo was doing was providing back up for Spencer. However, with this one being on a non contract basis, maybe he will get a start? I think Jimbo will stick with Spence for Torquay though!

I reckon this may be the guy that Gannon will get at the end of the season – if Willis has gone back to Anfield with an injury and he wasn’t getting a game then maybe he wasn’t deemed good enough? But I’m only assuming – We will have to wait and see!
