Stockport COunty look set to remember the clubs legendary manager Danny Bergara the special way after releasing plans to rename the main stand The Danny Bergara Stand.

Danny Bergara managed Stockport between 1989 and 1996 leading County to some of their happiest days in the clubs history. In July 2007 Danny Bergara passed away and from this time he has been more of a club legend than ever.

During his time at Edgeley Park Bergara had shown an uncanny knack of unearthing a player for little or no money and transforming them into outstanding players. He brought in the likes of Chris Beaumont, David Frain, Neil Edwards, Jim Gannon, Mike Flynn, Andy Preece, Kevin Francis, Lee Todd, Alun Armstrong, Tony Dinning, Sean Connolly, Peter Ward, Paul R Williams and Paul A Williams. All of whom; gave years of great service to the club and in many cases moved on for much larger ‘fees’ than they had arrived for.

County director Spencer Fearn, himself a Bergara protégé whilst a young player at Sheffield United, said earlier ‘having played under the great man, I know firsthand how inspirational he was and it is a natural thing for the club to do to honour him in this way’

Danny’s wife Jan told the club ‘It never ceases to amaze me how highly the club and supporters hold Danny in their esteem. My family and I are absolutely thrilled at the prospect of the main stand at Edgeley Park being known as the ‘Danny Bergara Stand’ and I would like to pass on our thanks to all involved in making this happen’

As Fans we should have a whip round and buy a Bronze Statue of Danny to Stand pride and place at the Cheadle End.

I’m up for that, been waiting too long for this to happen. In my eyes the best manager we’ve had in the modern era bar none. I appreciate that others will disagree and that other managers have done their bit for this club (including the present gaffer) but I think he would admit Danny’s boots would take a lot of filling. I cast my mind back to ’93 against Port Vale at Wembley. Even though we were losing for the whole of the second half the chant was “Danny Bergara’s Blue and White Army. I personally have never been so moved as I was that day.

I agree with you vicman, we were losing 2-0 and the Wembley Officals said we were mental but it got to the lads on the pitch and Big Kev fired a goal in and we came very close to snatching a draw. Grown men cried that day. You will have missed it but the previous season just before we lost our League Status the chant went up at Edgeley Park ” Heres to the Man from Uraguary ” and at that time we had nothing to Chant about, the Whole Cheadle End erupted and sang for some twenty minutes and plenty around me had tears in their eyes as they sang their hearts out.
